Moderat Likvidation: Mammutation

02/07/09  ||  Khlysty

My, my, my, ain’t this a treat for sore ears! Moderat Likvidation’s “Mammutation” is like the last 25 years never happened and we’re back in the early jolly ‘80s, brandishing our Mohawks and scaring the bejesus out of anyone stupid enough to even approach us and writing music that’s hard and fast – FASTERFASTEST, so that the kids can pogo out of their fucking brains. Is this cool, or wha’?

As far as I can glean from their website, Moderat Likvidation exist in one form or another since the early ‘80s, being one of the seminal bands of the then-nascent Swedish hardcore scene. Having never before heard of the band (they broke up 1984 and fucking came back a shitload of years later…), but from what I can gather from listening to “Mammutation”, Moderat Likvidation’s main inspiration was and still is early U.S. and U.K. hardcore punk. This means that the velocity factor of the songs is VERY high, the guitars have a metallic (but not metal) patina and the vocals are like coming from a really irate and really big barking dog. Cute.

Needless to say, this is as trad as it gets and even when there’s a song less speedy (e.g. “E de punk?”) you can hear the hardcore roots raising their ugly mugs and calling beguilingly for some more slam-dancing and general hell-raising. Since the lyrics are in Swedish –and I don’t speak Swedish, ça va?-, I get fuck-all of what the band rails against, although a head-on collision with establishment might not be a far-fetched assumption.

Look, I sincerely have nothing more to say. If you know what hardcore punk is and if you like hardcore punk in its most trad form, Moderat Likvidation will send you to moshing heaven for almost thirty minutes. Me, I much like the stuff, so with “Mammutation” I was happier’n a pig in shit. But, if you think that HxC is Hatebreed and their ilk, I would suggest that you avoid Moderat Likvidation. They’re too ugly for tender ears…

7 moshing, slam-dancing punks out of 10.
